Learning Math with Legos

Legos are a big hit in our house and let’s just say…math has not been as popular. My 8-year-old, Caleb, spends hours creating and building Legos. That’s why creating math problems out of Legos have been the perfect way to squeeze in extra math time!

How to Create Fun and Easy Math Problems with Legos

#1. First, make a set of cards together. Include your kids in the process. I made a handful of cards to start us off and turned over the opportunity for Caleb to create his own. We love arts and crafts so this made extra fun for the time we spent working together.

#2. Pick Math Problems. There are many ways to do this, and I went to Pinterest for inspiration. I found TONS of blogs that covered different math story problems, counting, and building. We hand-picked a few of our favorites and customized our card deck for our own math problems. This was a super cool step to work up together and I am happy to report this Mommy was NOT doing all the thinking. He had a blast creating HIS own math problems to solve and build. We took turns writing on the cards, too.

Example: Build a Lego Tower that is 6 more than 10 + 2

We made the lego math cards together. I wrote them, and he colored in the Lego drawings.

Caleb said a few times, “Let’s make the math problems even harder!”

With the cut-out cards, we added colorful construction paper to the back.

3. Grab the Legos: The best part finally arrived: testing out the cards and solving the math problems using Legos.

4. Repeat! Repeat and Repeat! I kid you not, we spent hours in the cycle of creating NEW cards and solving the problems using Legos, then solving again using different colors and shapes of the Legos. This has actually become a fun before-bedtime routine. I let him stay up a little longer for this, too.
