4 Valentine’s Day Ideas for Kids

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate with my children because I get to be extra corny and over-the-top mushy with them. I love the hearts, the colors, and the cute sayings.  Here are several Valentine’s Day ideas for kids that spread the mushiness and make them feel extra-special! It doesn’t take too much work to implement something small in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day, and the squeals of happiness will definitely fill your own heart to overflowing.

1. February mornings before Valentine’s Day. Leave a heart message taped to their door or the bathroom mirror so they find it every morning leading up to February 14. You can write something encouraging or something you love about them, and siblings can join in on the fun by writing each other sweet notes or drawing pictures. My son loves to hang up pictures his big sister draws for him!

2. Valentine’s Day school lunch ideas. Put a special treat in your child’s lunchbox. Think of things they love, then attach an adorable note to it and call it “14 ways I love you” or “14 reasons why I love you.”

Some examples that are certain to put a smile on their face:

Reese’s Pieces: I love you to pieces!

Smarties: I love you, smarty pants!

Hershey’s Kisses: A kiss for my Valentine!

Goldfish: You are o”fish“ially the best!

Extra gum: You are extra special to me!

Crazy straw: I’m crazy about you, Valentine!

Strawberries: I love you “berry” much!

Banana: I’m bananas for you!

Orange: “Orange” you glad it’s Friday, Valentine?

Popcorn: You make my heart pop, daughter/son!

Laffy Taffy: I love your laugh, Valentine!

Apple: You’re the apple of my eye!

Cheese stick: I don’t mean to be cheesy, but I love you!

Slice of pizza: A “pizza” my heart is always with you.

3. Valentine’s Day dinnertime ideas. Before dinner each night, go around and tell each other something you love about them. It has to be a new thing each day! Give them a prompt if they need help, such as: “I love when you…” or “I love how you…”

4. Valentine’s Day morning ideas. Leave a trail of paper hearts from their door to the table on Valentine’s Day morning. Have a special breakfast prepared, like heart-shaped pancakes, a plate of fruit made into a heart, or heart-shaped toast with strawberry jam. If mornings are as crazy for you as they are for my family, or you have picky breakfast eaters, you can do this for their after-school snack instead!

When she’s not up to her elbows in a random project, writing and re-writing lesson plans, or reading (trying to finish?) a good book, she and her husband are busy raising their three incredibly amazing kids: Emily, who just started Kindergarten, loves science, and wants to be a chemist when she grows up, Liam, a 3-year-old who can always be found playing with trains and building intricate tracks, and Charlotte, a 1 ½ year old who enjoys dragging her Lambie around and belting out songs in the middle of the store/doctor’s office/library. Jessica graduated from UT Dallas with a degree in Literary Studies and then went on to receive her teaching certification from Texas A&M Commerce. She has taught private school in Garland and public school in Plano ISD. She is currently teaching at a preschool in Wylie where her middle and little also attend.
