The Importance of a Mom Tribe

Mom Tribe. These are the women who help you navigate through the thick of pregnancy, post partum, sleep regressions, infertility, and all the feelings, heartache and happiness of motherhood.

These are the women who help you navigate through the thick of pregnancy, post partum, sleep regressions, infertility, and all the feelings, heartache and happiness of motherhood.

  • She may be a new friend though it feels like she’s always been there.
  • She may be related to you, maybe even your own mom. Whoever she is, the camaraderie you feel when you are together gets you through the hard times, the sunny days and everything in between.
  • She never places judgments and never fully gives a solution because she knows that one truly doesn’t exist.
  • She reminds you to follow your instincts, that you’re a good mother and constantly reiterates “you’ve got this momma.”
  • She understands what it’s like to feel like you’re failing sometimes. She knows what it’s like to not be able to calm a fussy baby, what nasty tricks sleep deprivation plays and even why you had to reheat your coffee five times before 10 am.
  • She is ferociously positive.
  • She doesn’t agree with every way you parent but loves you still because she knows you’re doing what is best for your child.
  • She is a shoulder to cry on and a hand to hold. Through the good and the bad, she is there for you to unload.

Unloading our frustrations opens space inside of us. I always joke with my tribe that our kids know when they break me. Like when I’ve hit my pinnacle of sleep deprivation mixed in with anxiety and that flustered feeling they so often leave us with. It’s after those days I send my tribe a novel worthy text, go have a good cry and the next morning everyone wakes up bright eyed and bushy tailed like “got ya mom.” Sometimes all we need is to reach out to someone who shares that common ground, to see ourselves in someone else. “How terrible is the 4 month sleep regression?” or “Her two hour naps and now 20 minute cat naps.

Universal Tribe.

I like to think that when other moms who are also complete strangers see me out in public they wish me well. That’s what I try to do because wrangling in a toddler at Target is hard. Calming a hungry baby who just wants to nurse in the checkout line is hard. Your tribe knows just how challenging it all can be.

  • It’s that woman that was behind us in the checkout that smiles and says “I was you five years ago and you’re doing a great job”
  • It’s the mama who helped me pick up a spilled bag of Halloween M&Ms as we were hurrying out of the store.
  • It’s the mom with the graphic tee that reads,”worlds most average mom” and you know you were never alone.

Becoming a mother has made me realize how much goodness there is in humanity.

You make a difference.

Go out into the world and make one.
