A Collin County Mom’s Guide to the Month of February

Well, let’s see, yesterday was 80 degrees, and it’s going to be 50 today… sounds reasonable. February weather is all over the place around these parts, so you’ll definitely want to have both indoor and outdoor options at the ready. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with fun family activities for you and your little ones, from tiny tots to school-aged sweeties.

Through February 19 :: Last chance to check out Dinosaurs Live! at the Heard Museum in McKinney. Be advised that they are unable to animate the dinos if it is below 45 degrees. That probably won’t happen, but like we said, you never know in February.

February 3, 10, 17 :: If you want to maximize your time at the Heard Museum, they also do a weekly Nature Story Time for younger kids with a different nature-themed book each week. Story time is free for members, otherwise included in general admission. 10:30 to about 11 am.

February 3, 10, 17, 4 :: Story Time with Eugene the Motormouse. Every Friday morning (10:30 am) at the Interurban Railway Museum in Plano, Miss Genie sings and reads to little ones with help from her puppet sidekick Eugene. Includes a post-story time tour of Car 360!

February 3 :: How cute is this? The McKinney Community Center will host a Daddy/Daughter Dance tonight from 6-8:30 pm. Live DJ and photo ops, plus dinner is included. $20 resident/$25 non-resident and registration is in-person only (no tickets sold at the door). Plan ahead because they’re saying it will sell out!

February 4 :: Arbor Hills Adventure at the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano. From 8:30-10:30 am discover hidden geological and fossil mysteries from a Texas Master Naturalist as you learn “What’s Under Arbor Hills?” Free event, but please register here if you plan to attend or by calling Parks & Rec at 972-941-7250.

February 4 :: I’m sensing a theme this month… if you are closer to the Frisco side of things, the Frisco Conference Center is also hosting a Daddy/Daughter Dance for ages Pre-K through 6th grade, with dances grouped by age. Pre-K to K starts at 2 pm, and the evening finishes with 5th and 6th graders from 8-9:30. Check out the link for your age group time and more info on this “Follow The Yellow Brick Road” dance. Tickets on sale now, $20 for residents/$25 for non-residents.

February 6, 13, 20, 27 :: Every Monday is Music & Movement at the McKinney Hall Library for ages 18 months – 5 years. Two sessions – 10 am and 11:15 am. Signing, singing, manipulatives, dance moves, rhyming… this program is good for the mind and the body.

February 7, 14, 21, 28 :: If you’re looking for an evening family activity that won’t break the bank, check out Cheap Skate Night at Thunderbird Roller Rink in Plano. Cheap Skate? Love it. Every Tuesday from 6-8pm admission is just $4 and skate rental is included!

February 10 :: Valentine’s Story Time at the Allen Public Library for ages 2+. The story this week will, of course, celebrate love and friendship. Two story sessions – 10:15 and 11 am. Tickets are required for this one, so get your free tickets starting at 10 am for either session.

February 18 :: Catch a hockey game at the Allen Events Center! Allen Americans vs Rapid City Rush with a 4:05 puck drop. Minor league games are so casual and fun. It’s a great way to see a sporting event as a family without the financial commitment or crowds of the major leagues.

February 18 :: How about something you’ve probably never done before? Free Family Hike Night at the Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve. A Texas Master Naturalist will show you native plants and wildlife habitats and teach environment protection. Like the Arbor Hills Adventure above, you need to register in advance. And don’t forget to bring a flashlight, or even better/cuter/funnier, a headlamp!

February 20 :: Need a mini-break for yourself when the kids are off of school? Sci-Tech Discovery Center is offering a one-day winter camp on President’s Day from 9 am to 4 pm. For your 1st-3rd grader, they offer the Science of Make Believe, where kids learn tricks of the trade of puppetry and get to create their own puppets. Older kids (4th through 6th grade) attend Animation Nation, which focuses on old-school animation tricks and stop-motion animation creation. $75 for members/$85 for non-members. Pretty cool, actually. Click here for more details and an FAQ on the camp.

February 24 :: Fun on the Farm: Let’s Make Friends! at the Heritage Farmstead Museum in Plano. Children ages 2-5 can participate in a story, activity, craft, and wagon ride. Space is limited and registration ends 2/22. Each $11 ticket includes adult and child, additional children are $7 each.

February 26 :: Check out our furry friends at the 15th annual Krewe of Barkus dog parade and festival in Historic Downtown McKinney. Vendors, interactive activities, and costumes! This year the theme is “Barkus Gone Bad – A Salute to Our Favorite Villains,” so YOU KNOW it’s going to be cute as can be. 12:30-4:30 pm.

February 28 :: American Girl Club at the Allen Public Library. For ages 7-12. Your child can bring her doll and celebrate Mardi Gras with Marie-Grace and Cecile! 4-5 pm. If your daughter is in the phase of toting her American Girl wherever she goes, this one’s right up your alley.
